Marriage is considered to be a sacred institution. When children come in the picture, the bond gets even more stronger between the partners. Their entire attention shifts on to the kid and they try to give best of the best to their children.
But in today's world, most of the parents complain about one thing and it is about children not listening to them or not respecting them enough from a very young age. It sounds weird. But yes, I have heard many saying "Oh God! I used to listen to my dad and never ask a question on his decisions." Now God only knows how true is that. But anyway, sometimes children are often spoilt by the parents unknowingly. Children are like flowers. If taken are care of, they blossom otherwise wither away.
Here can be some of the reasons why children do not listen or respond to parents:
1. Parents do not give them attention: Children want their parents to listen to what they are saying or watch and appreciate what they are doing. All of us love that kind of attention and appreciation. When parents immerse themselves in mobile or television or their work, children also follow their footsteps. Nowadays, kids immerse themselves in phones so much so that parents have to grab it from their hands. They look at the elders around them and see that even they are doing the same thing. They watch others and learn. So we need to set better example rather than simply blaming them.
2. Parents spend money but not time: Kids tend to ask many things which they see on television or the things that their friends have. They desire for certain items and sometimes even demand. Parents these days, tend to fall into this trap of thinking that "we as kids did not have these expensive things, since our parents didn't have enough money. Let us give this to our child." The kid takes advantage and demands a whole lot of things and understands that parents will finally give in. They even lose the value for money. So parents unknowingly because of their immense love for their children, they spoil them. Sorry to say.
3. Values are important: People around try to discipline than instilling values in young minds. Children love to listen to stories. So tell them as many as possible which has moral values. Sometimes kids tend to disregard the advice given by grandparents. They think that they are from very old generation and do not understand the modern ways of this generation. The grandparents are the best source of instilling values in kids and they become friends with children as make them understand in a gentle but firm manner.
4. No attachment with anyone: Children these days are pushed in to lots of classes and they are more often by surrounded secondary environment. They hobnob from one class to another. They lose attachment with parents and hence tend to listen to the outsiders and see parents as barriers in their life who restrict and discipline them. Let the child mingle with the outside world but see to it that the bond between you and the child is strong.
5. Making them live your dreams: The parents fail to understand that they are not supposed to impose their desires on the soft shoulders of their children. They might be your own flesh and blood and but they have their own mind, wish and desires. So let them be. Don't impose but ask and discuss.
6. No value for simple living anymore: Children needs to be given the taste of life. Parents think that "oh my poor child. He or She can not walk so much distance." Parents take them everywhere in cars or two wheelers. They lose the value for money and even take your time to be granted. They tend to believe that it is your duty to give them luxury. Instead, take them on buses or let them walk to the nearest store or market. Afterall, they have to be adults one day. Teach them modesty and the meaning of being humble. This gives them an understanding of how some people succeed by defeating all the odds in their life.
Instead of cribbing and complaining, I think it is time that elders learn from their mistakes and stop blaming the little ones who learn everything from us.
